Granite is a very hard
igneous or metamorphic rock with a crystalline appearance. It is formed
within the earth when magma cools down gradually under intense pressure.
Though it has a dense grain and is the hardest stone, it is found in a
variety of colors and textures.
It is used as a building material in flooring and pavements. Black granite is considered the best for counter tops and kitchen slabs. Granite can be
ground in various shapes though very intricate carving is not possible.
Its luxurious texture and fine polish give it the grace. Various
landscaping figurines of birds and animals, fountains and bird bath etc
can be carved out of the stone.
There are three basic varieties of granite based on their composition
namely Biotite-granite, Hornblende-granite, Tourmaline-granite. The shade
can be hundreds ranging from deep black to green, blue, crème, yellow and
hordes of other granite shades.
Granite quarries exist in Rajasthan, Bangalore, Chickmaglur, Hassan, Kolar,
Mysore, Bellary Raichur and at many other locations. Granite is obtained
by cutting, digging or blasting the rocks. Granite has to be dressed, cut
and polished appropriately before use.
