Slate is a fine grain rock formed from mud and stone sediments. It is formed beneath the earth
crust. It is a natural rock, resistant to water and fairly soft. Slate
being long lasting and water resistant, is substantially used in
construction. It is used in flooring, roofing and wall cladding. It being
a soft stone, can be chiseled and given different shapes. Slate stone
garden furniture, garden landscaping products including Slate stone
fountains and fireplaces are high in demand.
Slate stone varieties are based on the slate stone colors. The usual slate
colors are black, dark gray, greenish gray, copper and purplish gray.
Further the varieties of the slate stone depends on the slate stone
textures and type of finish. Heavy textures include Split face, Saw-cut,
Flamed and sandblasted. Smooth textures include hones and polished.
Slate stone quarries are quite common in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh,
Himachal Pradesh, Bihar with maximum in Rajasthan. Alwar slate stone is
considered the best one.
