Monuments,
tombstone/gravestone mark the final resting-place of the loved ones.
Tombstones are the connecting links of life and death. The alive erect the
stone sculptures in memory of the deceased.
Earlier whatever stone available in the vicinity was used as a tombstone
or gravestone. Gradually as the display on the tombstone started taking
shape of a memoir, the stone was carved and crafted. There was a time when
tombstones were practically monuments. TajMahal is one such example. The
Georgians in the west are known to make tombstones as permanent monuments.
Gradually marble was most preferred as a tombstone since it could be
carved and decorated in the desired way. Gradually granite and limestone
also were accepted for the purpose. They may be used in a polished neatly
cut form or may carry the rough rugged look given an artistic touch.
